The creation of the Mata do Krambeck State Park was announced this year. The government order was signed by Governor Romeu Zema (Novo) in May. In 1992, the Government of Minas Gerais created the Mata do Krambeck Environmental Protection Area, consisting of three private properties, whose objectives were to fully preserve the natural heritage, and to be supervised and inspected by the State Environmental Foundation (Feam) and the InstituteuState Forestry Authority (IEF). With the publication of the decree, negotiations for compensation to be paid to the families who own the two sites that make up the forest are still ongoing. However, one of the properties was split up and, years later, acquired by the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), which turned the area into the institution's botanical garden. In 2018, the IEF began the public consultation process for the park's creation project. The measure aimed to receive opinions and suggestions from the populations and institutions involved, aiming to make the process more transparent and participatory.
Management plan
With the creation of the decree, the next step is to finalize the negotiation of the two private properties that are within the Mata do Krambeck State Park so that the state can effectively take possession of the area as a whole. In parallel, the IEF, in partnership with the UFJF, is conducting a detailed phytosociological survey of the area to collaborate with the future management plan for the Conservation Unit, as well as a survey of trails, watercourses and animals.
Until the management plan is approved, actions such as the extraction of any natural resources from the park area are prohibited, as is the use of fire within the perimeter of the conservation unit under any circumstances. In addition, the raising of cattle, horses and other domestic animals within the state park area is prohibited, except in situations where the existence of consolidated use is proven.
