Second stage of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination campaign begins on November 1

    Ad

About 161 million cattle and buffaloes should be vaccinated in the second stage of the national vaccination campaign against foot and mouth disease 2022 which starts next Tuesday (1st) and continues until November 30th.

In ten states (AL, AM, CE, MA, PA, PB, PE, PI, RR and RN), vaccination will occur in animals up to 24 months old, according to the national vaccination calendar.

For the 11 states of the Federation (BA, ES, GO, MG, MS, MT, RJ, SE, SP, TO and DF), which make up Block IV of the Strategic Plan of the National Foot-and-Mouth Disease Surveillance Program (PE-PNEFA), vaccination in November will be for cattle and buffalo of all ages. In total, this block totals 141 million animals to be vaccinated.

The reversal of vaccination strategies in some states was adopted in April by Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Map) with the aim of balancing the demand for vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease with the industry's expected production schedule and, thus, guaranteeing the supply of vaccines to maintain satisfactory levels and maintain Brazilian herd immunity.

Vaccines must be purchased from authorized resellers and kept between 2°C and 8°C, from acquisition to the moment of use – including transport and application, already on the farm. New needles must be used to apply the 2 ml dose to the neck of each animal, preferring the cooler hours of the day, to properly contain the animals and apply the vaccine.

In addition to vaccination, the producer must provide proof to the animal health protection agency in his/her state. The vaccination declaration can be submitted online or, when this is not possible, in person at the posts designated by the state veterinary service within the stipulated deadlines.

If you have any doubts, we advise you to contact the animal health protection agency in your state.

    Vaccination withdrawal

After the November 2022 stage, seven states in Block IV of PE-PNEFA – Federal District, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Tocantins – will suspend vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease. In total, approximately 114 million cattle and buffalo will no longer be vaccinated, which corresponds to almost 50% of the country's total herd.

The action is part of the evolution of the project to expand foot-and-mouth disease-free zones without vaccination in the country, provided for in PE-PNEFA.

At this time of health evolution of the disease, there will be no restrictions on the movement of animals and products between the states of Block IV that will have vaccination suspended from 2022 and the other states that still practice vaccination in the country.

The Animal Health Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) is awaiting developments in other states to form part of the Brazilian bid for international recognition as a free zone without vaccination with the World Organization for Animal Health.

Currently, in Brazil, only the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Acre, Rondônia and parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso have international certification as a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination.
