State and municipal employees, and inspectors from the Minas Gerais Agricultural Institute (IMA) of the Varginha Regional Coordination and Boa Esperança Office, in the South of Minas, received a lecture on actions to combat rabies in herbivores (cattle, buffalo, equines, goats and sheep).
In the auditorium of the Federal University of Alfenas (Unifal), Varginha campus, the population control of the hematophagous bat Desmodus rotundus, the main transmitter of rabies, and health education activities aimed at the health of people and farm animals were discussed.
“Health education also contributes to the immunization of farm animals, instructing people to seek medical care when they show symptoms of the disease. Our inspectors communicate with the local health department, guiding those involved so that everything is done with the greatest possible synergy, updating and recycling information with the aim of maintaining the quality of care,” said the inspector of IMA in Varginha, Júlio César de Carvalho e Almeida.

Vaccination
The best way to prevent farm animals from contracting the disease is to vaccinate the entire herd annually. Inspectors visit the property to investigate and collect material for diagnosis, carrying out both population control of the disease transmitter and health education actions.
